Build Better Timeline Stories with Facebook’s Gowalla API

After Facebook’s acquisition of Gowalla last December 2011, former CEO Josh William revealed that they’re working on a project that will utilize both social networks. According to him, there’s an upcoming application programming interface that will allow users to create a more detailed Timeline.

How the Gowalla API Works

According to a Facebook blog posted by Software Engineer Alex Wyler, the new API will be a Foodspotting-like app that would tell all your friends what you’re eating. The difference is that you can also tag your friends who are sharing your meal. It will also allows users to do all the things that they can do in a status update – add friends, location, photos and videos – straight from the apps that they’re using.

However, Williams would like to see an app that is more aspiring in nature: “I haven’t seen a lot of exploration around ‘places I want to visit in the future’ or journalizing a trip from the past.” He also added that the new functionality will be beneficial for fitness apps.

Additional Properties: Location and Friends

A status update, uploaded photo or shared link from an app now has additional properties –– location and friends. This functionality is the same when a user posted an update or image on his or her Facebook profile.

The social media giant also added familiar controls for managing tags. Users can now choose the people who can see their app activity. They can also opt to feature, hide or route their app updates for tag review.

Open Graph’s User Generated Photos and Inline Video Playback

In the past few years, many new apps enable people to capture important moments of their lives via images and videos. Thus, Open Graph developers can now create applications that display user generated images and video playback in News Feed and Timeline.

User Generated Photo: The user generated photo can be attached in large format actions visible in the News Feed and Timeline. It can work when the user_generated property is set.

Inline Video Playback: The inline video playback is supported in News Feed and Timeline when the og:video tags are used on the object.

As Williams puts it: “The floodgates are open. I can’t wait to see what [app developers] come up with.”

The Gowalla API for Facebook gives developers the tools to create better apps that enable users to fill out their Timeline with more detailed status update. Regardless, the social media giant’s ultimate goal is to worm its ways into users’ lives. Moreover, a more detailed Timeline content is their way of providing a complex portrait of you to network advertisers.
