YouTube Next Cause: Helping Nonprofits with Video Marketing

YouTube announced its “YouTube Next Cause,” a whole day summit to help nonprofit organizations with video marketing. As posted on the program’s application page:

“YouTube Next Cause is a new program designed to help innovative organizations that are already changing the world learn how to better use online video to drive action… At an exclusive one-day summit in San Francisco on April 2, 2012, selected participants will get access to everything from training in YouTube fundamentals to advanced promotion and community engagement tips to one-on-one consulting sessions to grow their YouTube presence. This group of thought leaders will lead the way in changing the way Nonprofit Organizations use YouTube to grow awareness, interest, funds, volunteers, and global engagement.”

Value for Nonprofit Organizations

YouTube spokesperson Jessica Mason shared on Mashable that the program aims to help nonprofits to “turn their view counts into actions.” Through YouTube Next Cause, participants will “receive an incredible networking opportunity with Google’s thought leaders and gain insider knowledge on the best way to engage audiences.”

In addition to this, Mason shared three tips for nonprofits to expand their channels:

  1. Engage with the community, by replying to comments and giving a strong call to action.
  2. Upload regularly, to create a consistent relationship with your community.
  3. Keep in mind that great videos don’t require a hefty budget.

YouTube Next Cause is the latest installment of the video-sharing site’s NextUp Program. Prior to nonprofits, the program has helped YouTube entertainers transform their videos into primary careers. It has also worked with chefs and athletic trainers. With the help of YouTube Nonprofit Program, there are 30 organizations that garnered over 10 million views, and 271 more with 1 million hits.

How to Join

Nonprofit organizations can join the whole day summit on April 2 by filling in an application form before February 27, 2012. They should also adhere to the guideline’s eligibility.

The organization’s representative must be of legal age, part of YouTube’s Partner Program, have a YouTube account of good standing (without copyright or Terms of Use issues), and can attend the day-long workshop on April 2 in Google’s San Francisco Office. Meanwhile, the nonprofit organization must be part of the YouTube Nonprofit Program, registered as 5013c non-profit, and its principal place of business must be in the United States.

The organization that can join the summit will be evaluated by Google based on various criteria. The chosen participants will be announced on March 5 at YouTube Next Cause Invitees section.
