Google+ users are in for some big changes, as the search engine giant’s Senior Vice President Vic Gundotra announced a simpler and sleeker version of its social network. The redesigned media page features larger images and videos, customizable navigation and more. The new design fits well with Google’s streamlined look, helping users to draw more attention to the content that they are sharing.
Timeline-like Profile
One of the biggest changes that a Google+ user may notice is his or her Timeline-like profile. Mimicking Facebook’s page layout, users can now upload a large horizontal image that will appear alongside their profile image. This feature would help Google+ to compete against the social media giant while providing a more personalized user experience.
Larger Images and Videos and the Insta-gallery
While Google+ is already doing a good job in showcasing various forms of content, the redesigned social media will help it attract even more attention. Now, an image can take almost the entire above-the-fold area. Additionally, the “insta-gallery” will show the photo’s entire photoset when a user hovers a mouse over it.
Customizable Navigation Ribbon
In line with providing a more personalized user experience, the search engine giant also offers an improved and customizable navigation ribbon. It can be located at the left side of the page and provides users an easy way to get around the stream. It also enables them to move apps up and down to organize it based on their preferences, hover over it to reveal a set of quick actions, and show or hide apps from the “More” section.
More Manageable Hangouts Page
The Hangouts Page is also easier to manage now because of the new Google+ layout. Previously, users will have to work directly into the stream to set the Hangouts section. But with the new look, a separate page is now implemented. This page includes the updated Hangouts invitations and quick access to public hangouts, while the popular hangouts are displayed on a large billboard at the top of the page.
From What’s Hot to Explore
Google has renamed its “What’s Hot” section to “Explore.” Here, users can pull up current trends on the social network, as well as view popular content.
Gundotra said that these changes will be rolled out to all Google+ users in the coming days. However, there are still plenty of things left for them to do. Nevertheless, the search engine giant is on its way in creating a seamless social experience for all of its users.
